How to play Hue & Hide

You are a chameleon in a room being searched. Blend your paint until you match whatever is behind you, then hold still as the light sweeps past. Move at the wrong moment and you are seen.

Play Hue & Hide

Most hide-and-seek games are about finding somewhere to stand. This one is about what colour you are when you get there. Paint mixes rather than replaces, so each dab pulls you part-way towards a pot and matching a surface takes two or three deliberate choices — you cannot simply pick the right answer from a list.

Three things give you away, and all three only count while you are inside a seeker's light: a colour that does not match the surface behind you, moving, and paint that is still wet. That is the whole game. Painting and moving are both safe when nobody is looking and both fatal when someone is, so every round becomes a question of timing rather than reflexes.

Colour matching is judged in CIE L*a*b*, the same perceptual space used for print proofing, rather than by comparing raw RGB values. It matters more than it sounds: plain RGB rates two similar greens as further apart than a light and dark grey that anyone can tell apart instantly, which would make the game feel arbitrary. Here, if it looks like a match to you, it scores as one.

Every room is generated and then checked before you see it — at least three hiding places must be reachable with the paints you were given, and at least two of them must need genuinely different colours, so there is always an answer and always a reason to move. Rounds add seekers, widen their cones and tighten what counts as a match, and there is a daily room seeded from the date so everyone plays the same one.

What you can use it for

  • Play a short stealth game that needs no download, no account and no reflexes.
  • Practise colour matching in a way that is actually a game rather than an exercise.
  • Fill a few minutes with something tense that still finishes in under a minute a round.
  • Play offline on a commute once the page has loaded once.
  • Compare a daily room with friends, since everyone gets the same one.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Read the two swatches

The left swatch is your current colour, the right one is the surface you are standing in front of. Your job is to make them the same.

  2. 2

    Dab paint to blend

Tap a paint pot to mix some of it into your skin. Paint blends rather than replaces, so two or three dabs move you close to a pot's colour.

  3. 3

    Watch the wet paint

Fresh paint glistens for about a second and gives you away even if the colour is perfect. Paint while nobody is pointing a light at you.

  4. 4

    Crawl between hiding places

Drag the chameleon to move. Moving is always visible inside a light, so cross the room while the seekers are looking elsewhere.

  5. 5

    Hold still and survive

Once you match the surface behind you, stop. The suspicion bar drains whenever nobody can see you. Outlast the timer to clear the round.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hue & Hide free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no download, no account and no in-app purchases.

Can I get stuck in a room I cannot win?

No. Every room is verified before it is shown: at least three hiding places must be matchable with the paints you have been given, and at least two of them must need different colours. If you are struggling it is a timing problem, not an impossible room.

How is the colour match judged?

In CIE L*a*b*, a perceptual colour space, so the game agrees with your eye about what counts as close. Comparing raw RGB values would rate obviously different greys as a better match than two similar greens.

Why was I spotted when my colour was a perfect match?

Because you were moving, or your paint was still wet. Both give you away on their own inside a seeker's light. Standing still with dry paint is the only fully safe state.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It is built for touch first — drag to crawl, tap the pots to paint — and works in portrait or landscape on phone, tablet and desktop.

Can I play offline?

Yes. Once you have loaded the page once it is cached, so it keeps working with no connection.

Is it colour-blind friendly?

Partly. The two swatches sit side by side for direct comparison and the match indicator glows when you are within tolerance, so you can play from that cue rather than from the colours themselves.

Free, no download and no sign-up. Works on phone and desktop.
