About Cooking Measurement Converter
Convert common recipe units for volume and weight, including teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, milliliters, grams, ounces and pounds.
Recipe conversions split into two safe categories: volume to volume, and weight to weight. This tool does both, but it does not pretend that one cup of flour weighs the same as one cup of honey — ingredient-density conversions need ingredient-specific data.
The volume units use US kitchen measurements. Weight units use standard metric and imperial definitions.
Volume to volume, weight to weight
Volume units convert exactly: one US cup is about 236.6 ml, 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons, and one US tablespoon is about 14.8 ml. Weight units do too: an ounce is 28.35 grams and a pound is 453.6 grams. These conversions do not depend on what you are measuring, which is why they are reliable.
Cups to grams needs an ingredient
A cup measures space, a gram measures mass, so the answer depends on what is in the cup. The Volume ↔ weight category asks for the ingredient and uses approximate averages per US cup: about 125 g for all-purpose flour, 200 g for granulated sugar, 227 g for butter, 237 g for water and 339 g for honey. Two cups of flour is therefore about 250 g, while two cups of honey is about 678 g.
Treat these as approximations. How tightly flour is packed, the brand and the humidity all move the real figure, often by 10 per cent or more for flour. For baking, weighing is more reliable than cups; use the converted gram figure as a guide and trust the recipe's own weights when it gives them.
US cups, UK cups and other traps
The volume units here are US kitchen measures. A UK or Australian cup, tablespoon or pint is a different size, so a recipe from another country can come out noticeably off if you convert it with US values. Check which system the recipe uses, and note that the ounce used for weight is not the fluid ounce used for volume: a cup of water is about 8 fluid ounces but weighs about 8.3 ounces.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert cups to grams?
Yes, with an ingredient. A cup is volume and a gram is weight, so the answer depends on what is in the cup. Use the Volume ↔ weight category and pick the ingredient; the figures are approximate averages.
Are these US or UK cups?
The cooking volume units are US measurements. A US cup is about 236.6 ml.
