File Share – Send Files Between Devices Without Uploading Them

About File Share

Open this page on both devices, pair them with a code or QR, and send. The file travels directly from one device to the other — it is never uploaded to us, so there is no size cap, no queue and no waiting for a download link.

Most "send a big file" services upload your file to a server, keep it for a few days, and give the other person a link. That means your file sits on someone else's computer, and you are limited by their free-tier size cap. File Share does not work that way: it opens a direct connection between the two browsers using WebRTC and streams the file across it. Our server only helps the two devices find each other — it never sees a single byte of what you send.

It works between any two modern browsers, which is the point. Phone to laptop, Android to iPhone, Windows to Mac, work machine to personal machine — anything that can open a web page can take part, with nothing to install on either end.

Two devices on the same Wi-Fi will usually see each other automatically under Nearby Devices. If they do not — most often because one is on IPv4 and the other on IPv6 — use the short network code in Settings, or scan the QR code, to pair them manually.

What you can use it for

  • Move photos or a video off your phone onto your laptop without a cable or a cloud account.
  • Send a large file to someone in the same room, faster than email and with no size limit.
  • Get a document from a work computer to a personal one without uploading it anywhere.
  • Share a file between Android and iPhone, which have no common built-in transfer.
  • Hand over a confidential document that you would rather not put in cloud storage.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

Open the page on both devices

Go to the File Share page on the sending device and the receiving device. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Pair them

Devices on the same network usually appear automatically under Nearby Devices. Otherwise scan the QR code, or enter the short room code shown on the other device.

  3. 3

    Pick your files

Choose the files to send. You can select several at once.

  4. 4

    Accept on the other device

The receiving device is asked to accept before anything transfers, so nothing arrives unrequested.

  5. 5

    Save the file

Once the transfer finishes, save it from the receiving device. Keep both pages open until it completes.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files travel directly between the two devices over a WebRTC connection. Our server only passes the small amount of connection data needed for the two browsers to find each other — it never receives, stores or sees the file itself.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no limit imposed by us, because we are not storing the file. In practice the limits are your devices, your network speed, and keeping both pages open until the transfer finishes.

Does it work between iPhone and Android?

Yes. Any two devices with a modern browser can transfer to each other, which is what makes it useful between platforms that have no shared built-in option.

Do the devices have to be on the same Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily — you can always pair with the room code or QR. Being on the same network is what lets devices appear automatically under Nearby Devices, and it is usually faster.

Why can my two devices not see each other?

Automatic discovery groups devices by their public network address, so it fails when one device is connected over IPv4 and the other over IPv6 — a browser cannot detect devices on a local network directly, the way an installed app can. Use the network code in Settings, or the QR code, to pair them manually.

Why did the connection fail?

Some restrictive or corporate networks block direct peer-to-peer connections. If a transfer will not start, try both devices on the same normal Wi-Fi network, or a mobile hotspot.

Is it free?

Yes — completely free, with no account, no app, and no limits on how much you send.
