Working out a tip in your head is easy right up until the bill is 87.40, the tip is 18 percent, and it has to be split between five people. This calculator does all three steps at once: the tip amount, the total with tip, and the per-person share.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
It depends entirely on where you are. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is normal in restaurants; in much of Europe rounding up or around 10 percent is typical; in Japan tipping is not customary at all. Check local norms rather than assuming.
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Both are common, and neither is wrong. This calculator works on whatever figure you enter, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if you prefer to tip on that.
Can it split a bill unevenly?
Not currently — it splits the total evenly across the number of people you set. For an uneven split, work out each person's share of the bill and calculate the tip on that.
Is my data sent anywhere?
