How to play Troll Trap

Every room gives you an instruction. Every instruction is a lie. Doing what you are told gets you killed, so the puzzle is working out what the interface is actually doing instead.

Play Troll Trap

Most puzzle games teach you rules and then test them. This one does the opposite: it teaches you a rule and then breaks it. A button runs away when you reach for it. A loading bar stops one percent short and stays there. An advert refuses to close. The instruction telling you to give up is physically covering the exit.

It is deliberately short and deliberately mean. Rooms take seconds to solve once you see the trick and can take a lot longer before that, and dying is the normal way to make progress rather than a punishment — your death count is displayed with commentary. If you get genuinely stuck, a hint unlocks after four failures on the same room.

The whole thing runs in your browser with no download and no account, and your progress is saved on your own device.

What you can use it for

  • Kill five minutes with something that actually makes you think sideways.
  • Watch someone else play it and try not to tell them the answer.
  • Play a puzzle game that respects your time — rooms last seconds, not hours.
  • Enjoy a trick game that is fair: every solution is visible on screen the whole time.
  • Play something on a phone with one hand and no tutorial.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Read the instruction

Each room shows you what to do. Assume it is a lie, because it is.

  2. 2

    Try the obvious thing

You will probably die. That is how you learn what the room is really doing.

  3. 3

    Watch how the interface reacts

The solution is always something on screen behaving oddly — a button that dodges, a panel you can drag, a word that is a different colour.

  4. 4

Take a hint if you need one

After four deaths in the same room a hint unlocks. It nudges rather than answering.

  5. 5

    Escape all nine rooms

Your total death count is your score. Lower is better, but nobody is judging.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Nine rooms, no sign-up, no download, no purchase.

Is it supposed to be this unfair?

Yes. It is a troll game — being misled is the entire point. Every solution is visible on screen the whole time, so it is unfair but never dishonest.

I am completely stuck. What now?

Die four times in the same room and a hint button appears. The hint points at what to look at without giving the answer away.

Does it save my progress?

Yes, on your own device. Rooms unlock in order and your death count carries across sessions. Clearing your browser data resets it.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It is built for touch first — every puzzle is solved by tapping, holding or dragging, and it works one-handed.

Is there any sound?

Yes, and it can be muted from the toolbar. The sounds are generated in the browser rather than downloaded, so the game stays tiny.

Free, no download and no sign-up. Works on phone and desktop.
