About Photo Organizer
Pick a folder full of unsorted phone photos and this tool groups them into dated event folders, finds near-identical burst shots, and copies a tidy result into a destination folder you choose — all on your own device.
A phone camera roll backup is usually one enormous folder: years of photos and videos with no structure, plus a burst of five or six near-identical shots every time someone took a photo. Photo Organizer reads the real capture date out of each photo and video (EXIF for photos, the video's own metadata, or the filename for messaging-app exports) and groups everything shot close together in time into its own dated folder.
Turning on near-duplicate detection finds bursts — several frames of the same moment shot seconds apart — and either automatically keeps the sharpest frame or lets you review each burst yourself and choose which frames to keep, the same way you'd cull a memory card.
Everything happens locally using your browser's File System Access API: your files are read from the folder you pick and copied into the destination folder you pick. Nothing is uploaded, and your original folder is only ever read from, never moved, edited, or deleted.
What you can use it for
- Sort a phone's entire camera roll backup into one folder per trip or event before uploading it somewhere else.
- Clean out a WhatsApp/Snapchat media folder full of forwarded photos and burst duplicates.
- Prepare a photo library for import into another photo app without carrying over 5 near-identical shots of every moment.
- Free up space by identifying near-duplicate bursts without blindly auto-deleting anything.
How it works, step by step
- 1
Choose the folder to organize
Pick the messy folder. It's scanned locally — nothing leaves your device.
- 2
Choose a destination folder
Pick where the organized copies should go. It can be a different folder or even the same one.
- 3
Set your options
Optionally skip trashed/hidden files, and turn on near-duplicate burst detection with auto-keep or manual review.
- 4
Organize
Dated event folders are created in the destination and your files are copied in. The source folder is never changed.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Every step — reading dates, comparing photos, and copying files — runs in your browser using the File System Access API. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does this delete or move my original photos?
No. The tool only ever copies files into the destination folder you choose. Your source folder is read from, never written to, moved, or deleted — even files it decides not to copy stay exactly where they were.
Which browsers does it work on?
Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers, on desktop and Android. It relies on the File System Access API for local folder access, which Safari and Firefox do not yet support.
Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes — HEIC and HEIF photos are decoded locally in your browser for near-duplicate comparison and previews, using the same on-device process as every other format.
How does it decide what counts as a duplicate?
It looks for photos shot within about 10 seconds of each other that are visually near-identical — a real camera burst, not just similar photos taken minutes apart. You can review every detected burst yourself before anything is organized.
