About Whitespace Cleaner

Paste in text with stray spaces, tabs, or extra blank lines and get back a clean version — trimmed, collapsed, and consistent.

Text copied out of a PDF, an email client, or an old document often carries invisible baggage: trailing spaces on every line, tabs mixed with spaces, or a run of a dozen blank lines where one would do. None of it's visible until it breaks something — a diff that shows every line as changed, a config file that won't parse, a paragraph with an ugly gap.

Each kind of cleanup is its own toggle rather than one all-or-nothing pass, since not every document needs every fix — code samples usually want tabs left alone, while prose almost always wants blank-line runs collapsed.

The character count before and after gives a quick sense of how much was actually invisible whitespace, which is sometimes surprisingly large for text that's been passed through several tools already.

What you can use it for

  • Clean up text copied from a PDF that added trailing spaces to every line.
  • Convert tabs to spaces, or remove them, before pasting into a system that mishandles tabs.
  • Collapse a document's blank-line runs down to consistent single spacing.
  • Strip leading/trailing whitespace from a whole block before saving it as config or data.
  • Tidy up text before a diff so real changes aren't hidden by whitespace noise.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Paste your text

Anything with stray spaces, tabs, or extra blank lines.

  2. 2

    Choose what to clean

Trim lines, collapse spaces, handle tabs, and decide how blank lines are treated.

  3. 3

    Copy the result

See the before/after character count and copy the cleaned text.

Frequently asked questions

Will this remove all blank lines, or just extra ones?

That's a choice — "Collapse to one blank line" keeps single blank lines between paragraphs but reduces runs of several down to one; "Remove all blank lines" removes every one.

What happens to tabs by default?

Nothing — tabs are left as-is unless you choose to convert them to spaces or remove them, since code samples often need tabs preserved.

Does this change the text itself, or just the whitespace around it?

Only whitespace — spaces, tabs, and blank lines. No visible characters are added, removed, or reordered.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Cleaning happens entirely in your browser.
