Mic Test – Is Your Microphone Working?

About Mic Test

Tap Start, allow microphone access and speak. The level meter moves with your voice if the microphone works. Record a five-second clip to hear exactly what others will hear on a call.

A moving level meter proves the browser is receiving sound, but not how it sounds. The playback check records five seconds and plays it straight back, which catches muffled audio, a mic that is too far away, or background hum — the problems other people notice on a call before you do.

If you have more than one microphone — a laptop's built-in mic, a headset and a USB mic, say — pick the one to test from the list. The name shown is the device the browser is actually using, which is often the answer to 'why can't they hear me?': the call app is listening to a different microphone than the one you're speaking into.

Nothing is sent anywhere. The sound is analysed in your browser to draw the meter, and the test recording lives in memory only until you leave the page.

What you can use it for

  • Check your microphone before a video call, interview or online class.
  • Find out which of several microphones the browser is using.
  • Hear how your voice sounds through a new headset or USB microphone.
  • Confirm a laptop's built-in mic still works after an update.
  • Test whether a noisy room is being picked up.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Tap Start

Your browser asks for permission to use the microphone — allow it.

  2. 2

    Speak normally

The level meter should move with your voice.

  3. 3

    Pick another mic if needed

Choose from the list of microphones the browser can see.

  4. 4

    Record and play back

Record five seconds and listen to what others will hear.

Frequently asked questions

The meter doesn't move. What's wrong?

Check the mic isn't muted by a hardware switch or keyboard key, that the right microphone is selected in the list, and that no other app (such as a call you left open) is holding it. On Windows and macOS, also check that the browser is allowed to use the microphone in the system privacy settings.

I blocked the permission by mistake. How do I undo it?

Click the lock or settings icon next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

Only the optional five-second test clip is recorded, and it stays in your browser's memory so you can play it back. Nothing is uploaded or saved.

Why does my voice sound quieter in the recording?

Browsers apply echo cancellation and noise suppression by default, the same processing call apps use, so the playback is close to what people hear on a call.
