Video Compressor
Video Compressor
Reduce a video file with browser-side bitrate presets. Nothing is uploaded, and the result downloads from this device.
- 1Choose videoDrop or select a playable file.
- 2Pick qualityEstimate presets before compressing.
- 3DownloadMP4 where supported, WebM otherwise.
Or drag and drop one video here. Large files need enough browser memory to finish.
Runs entirely in your browser — your video is never uploaded.
About Video Compressor
Make a video smaller without uploading it. Choose a video, estimate a few quality presets from a short sample, then let your browser re-record the file at the selected bitrate and download the result.
Most video compressors upload your file to a server. ToolsNest keeps the video on your device and uses your browser's own MediaRecorder encoder, so private clips, screen recordings, and family videos never leave the browser tab.
The tradeoff is honesty: browser video compression has to play through the video once in real time, so a two-minute video takes roughly two minutes to compress. The output container is MP4 when your browser supports MP4/H.264 recording and WebM otherwise.
This V1 focuses on practical, no-cost compression presets rather than a heavy ffmpeg.wasm download. Exact target-size encoding can be evaluated later, but the current tool already gives sample-based size estimates so you can pick the best quality before compressing the full file.
What you can use it for
- Reduce a phone video before sending it over email or chat
- Compress a screen recording before uploading it to a form or ticket
- Make a video smaller without trusting an upload-based compressor
- Compare quality presets before spending time on the full compression
- Create a lighter copy of a video while keeping the original unchanged
How it works, step by step
- 1
Choose a video
Select or drop a video your browser can play.
- 2
Estimate presets
Run a short sample so each quality preset shows an approximate output size and preview frame.
- 3
Pick quality
Choose the highest preset that fits your size/quality goal, or enter a target MB to select the closest estimate.
- 4
Compress and download
Keep the tab open while the browser re-records the video, then download the compressed MP4 or WebM file.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The video is decoded, sampled, compressed and downloaded entirely in your browser. ToolsNest does not upload or store the file.
Why does compression take as long as the video?
This browser-only V1 uses MediaRecorder, which has to play through and re-record the video at normal speed. That avoids a heavy ffmpeg.wasm download, but it is not instant.
Can I compress to an exact file size?
Not exactly in V1. The tool estimates preset sizes from a short sample and can suggest the closest preset for a target MB value, but browser encoders do not expose exact-size controls.
What format will the compressed video use?
MP4 when the browser supports MP4/H.264 recording through MediaRecorder, otherwise WebM. The download button uses the actual output extension.
Which browsers work best?
Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers work best because they support the recording APIs this tool needs. Safari and Firefox support varies.
