OpenFile Share
Pair two devices with a code or QR and send files directly between them — nothing is uploaded.
OpenFile Share pairs two devices with a short code or QR scan and transfers files directly between them using WebRTC — a peer-to-peer connection, not an upload-then-download through a server. That means no file size cap imposed by a free-tier upload limit, and the file itself never sits on anyone's server in between, unlike most "send a file" web tools.
It's built for the moment you need to get a photo from your phone to your laptop, or a document from one computer to another, and the usual options — emailing yourself, a USB cable, a cloud drive sync — all feel like more steps than the job deserves.
Nearby device discovery groups devices on the same network automatically; a manual network code is the fallback when automatic discovery can't find the other device — different networks, or an IPv4/IPv6 mismatch that no browser-based tool can bridge.
What you can use it for
- Send a photo or file from your phone to your computer without a cable or cloud upload
- Transfer a large file directly between two devices with no upload size limit
- Move a document between two computers on the same network quickly
- Send a file to someone nearby without creating an account on a file-sharing service
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No — File Share uses WebRTC to connect the two devices directly and transfer the file peer-to-peer. A small amount of connection-setup data (not your file) briefly passes through a signaling server to establish that direct connection; your actual file content never touches it.
Is there a file size limit?
There's no artificial limit imposed by the tool. Very large files depend on both devices' available memory and a stable connection between them, since it's a direct peer-to-peer transfer rather than a server-mediated upload.
Why can't two devices see each other as "nearby"?
Nearby detection groups devices sharing the same network address. If one device is on Wi-Fi and the other on mobile data, or they're on different IP versions, automatic discovery won't find them — use the manual network code in Settings instead, which works regardless of network.
Do both devices need the same app installed?
No — File Share works from any modern browser on both ends. No app install, no account, just opening the page on both devices.
